The Thalian Theatre Group are an amateur dramatics society based in Basildon, Essex.

We aim to put on three main productions a year, sometimes with smaller productions in-between.

We are totally self funded, and any profits made from our productions or fundraising activities goes back into putting on great theatre. The drama group was established in 1972 and have performed over 130 plays in this time!

Most of our rehearsals and auditions take place in Laindon Community Centre, and our main performances are hosted by The Towngate Theatre, Basildon. However we have performed in a wide variety of locations, including Bars, Barns And Yacht Clubs.

In addition to staging shows The Thalians have regular social events, including quiz nights, after show parties, theatre trips, picnics, and comedy evenings.

We sometimes work with local charities, either by having collections on certain play nights or by donating a percentage of the ticket price. If you are a local charity who would like to be involved with us please Contact Us.

The Thalians were established in 1972 by a group of young actors, they included current members Derek Bill, Mike Betteridge and Penny Betteridge.

The main goal of the group was, and still is, to put on a wide range of productions, rather than just the murder mysteries and pantomimes prolific in community theatre.

The group has performed plays written by Shakespeare, Ayckbourn, Brecht, and even their own members. In 1996 they performed "Wyrd Sisters," their first production based on a book by Terry Pratchett.

Following its success the group has regularly performed plays adapted from his work.

The Thalians are always keen to welcome new members, whether they want to be on or off stage.

There are many different opportunities to get involved with the group. Please visit the Membership section for more information.
